When should we make our wedding? This is largely a practical question. There are considerations about being at a time the groom and bride have a break in school or jobs, about family being present, about being able to afford the event, about making sure the right person is able to officiate, and so on. There are also a number of halachic considerations.

It is important that a date is set which will allow the bride to be at the right point in her menstrual cycle.1

There are days that one is not allowed to make a wedding:

• Shabbos2 • Yom Tov3 • Erev Yom Tov4 (Erev Shabbos is allowed) • During Sefiras Haomer until Lag Baomer5 • During the period between 17 Tammuz and 9 Av6

• Fast Days There are days that the practice has become to avoid making a wedding:

There are days that are considered preferable to make a wedding:

• During the first half of the lunar month9

o Some say this does not apply in Elul, Tishrei and Adar

o Some say this need not be considered at all10

Are there better days of the week?

• A wedding should not take place on Shabbos. • A wedding should not take place on Motzei Shabbos. • Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are indicated as days of bracha for getting married but there are

many other considerations and one need not limit oneself for other considerations.11

Where does the wedding need to be? There are many practical considerations to be taken into account.

• There are many who forbid making a chuppa in the sanctuary of the shul as it resembles Christian

practice.12 • There are those who allow it.13

• There are many who forbid making a chuppa in the sanctuary of a non-orthodox shul.14

• There are some who allow it.15

• Many suggest the chuppa should be made outside.16

• Having a skylight is sufficient17 • Some Sephardic communities specifically get married indoors.18

What needs to happen before the wedding from the perspective of halacha? Yes. It is important for the groom and bride to attend choson and kallah lessons so they get to learn the halachik ramifications of living as husband and wife from the perspective of Taharas Hamishpacha. is a priority to set up at the beginning of engagement so there is sufficient time to cover everything. In addition, these classes are meant to have a component about the hashkafa about being married in Torah thought. If this component is absent, it is important to reach out to one’s Rabbi to ensure this is included. Kallah lessons can take around 12 sessions and choson lessons can take around 5 sessions. It is important to request of a Rav to be the mesader kiddushin – to officiate the wedding ceremony – and to sit down with him to clarify all questions that may need addressing. Is there something to not seeing each other the week before the wedding? It seems that this has become the custom but it is not clear where this comes from. It is certainly not mentioned in the Mishna, Talmud or even Rishonim. There are some groups in Judaism who suggest that the groom and bride should not see each other the entire engagement, or they should limit it. For the many who do not follow this, it is hard to trace the origin of this practice.

Rabbi Binyamin Forst observes19: “Although this custom is not halachah, and has no early source in the poskim, it is

a good custom because it gives the chasan and kallah an opportunity to be alone and to reflect upon the profound changes that are about to take place in their lives.”

Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan notes20: “Of course, if it is necessary for the wedding preparations or for other reasons, it is

permitted [for the couple to see each other]. In some circles, the custom is merely for them not to see each other on the day of the wedding.” Some suggest this is really a secular custom which infiltrated into Judaism. Rav Moshe Feinstein was known not to be makpid on this. What is this business about not being alone on the day of the wedding?

There is a Midrash, Pirkei D’Rabbi Eliezer21, which describes Hashem sending his angels to guard Adam on the day of his marriage. Rav David Luriah22, in his commentary explains that at the time a person is about to do

something really important, the forces of evil try to prevent one from doing it and even are willing to harm them. That being the case, it is important that the choson and kallah are accompanied 24 hours before their wedding. Does anything else need to be done the week before the wedding? There is a beautiful minhag for a groom and bride who lost a parent, to visit the grave of the parent before the wedding to invite them to the wedding. It is taught that the souls of one’s departed family are present at the

wedding.23

Do I need to fast on the day of the wedding? Why?

The custom among Ashkenazik Jewry is for the groom and bride to fast the day of the wedding.24

This is because:

a. their sins are atone for on the day as they get married.

b. So noone should get drunk before the chuppa.25

c. Another idea is to disassociate from the physical as they enter their relationship with each other.

If it will harm them and affect their wedding, they do not have to fast.26

This fast does not take place on days that Tachanun is omitted for the community.

The fast goes till after the chuppa or after tzeis hakochavim.27

They should both say ‘Anenu’ at Mincha and include a full vidui at the end of the Amida like on Erev Yom Kippur.

These are said even if one is not fasting.28

What is the choson’s tisch for? The choson’s tisch is the time for the officiating Rabbi to complete the signing of the necessary documents. These include the Tenaim, the Kesuba and the wedding license. This is also a time for the groom to share divrei Torah. Why do they keep interrupting the groom when he speaks? This is to not to embarrass him if he does not have what to say. It can also be a reminder about the broken luchos

since this is a time like Matan Torah, and the work needed for the second luchos is emphasized at this time.29

What is the bedekken? The main part of the pre-chuppa ceremony is surrounding the bride. The bride is treated like a queen and

already in the times of the Mishna, she is described as sitting on a special throne-like chair.30 It is a time she is

surrounded by friends who come to greet her and give her a bracha for her wedding. What happens with the veil?

Later, when the groom is accompanied to the bride, he will lower the veil of the bride.31

Why?

• Some suggest that this has halachik value as being one part of the process of nisuim.32

• Others date it back to the time Rivka met Yitzchak and veiled herself as a sign of modesty. • Some suggest it relates to Yaakov Avinu and his marriage to ‘Rachel.’ What else is done at the bedekken?

The custom is to give a bracha to the bride as was given to Rivka Imenu.33 Usually today both fathers and

grandfathers give this bracha. In addition, the fathers give her the bracha as they do on Friday nights. The bracha is as follows: Bereishis 24:60

And they blessed Rebekah and said to her, “O sister! May you grow into thousands of myriads; May your descendants seize the gates of their foes.” After the bedekken, it is customary for the father to bless the groom and the parents to bless the bride before

the chuppa. 34

Why white? The minhag is for the bride to be in white and the groom to wear a kittel. One idea in this is the idea of purity.

Another idea is remembering the day of death to make them think carefully about this important time.35

Why does there need to be a chuppa? Who walks the aisle? The minhag is for the groom to walk the aisle first and then the bride. Why does the bride walk around the groom? The minhag is for the bride to walk around the groom seven times. What is the first bracha for? The bracha under the chuppa reads as follows: It is a bracha on the enterprise of marriage as a whole. What is the business with the ring? What is the kesuba? Why is it read at the chuppa? Why are there sheva brachos under the chuppa? What are all those extra things I see at Sephardic weddings? How many kibbudin are there? What is the cheder yichud for? Are there any other halachik requirements at the wedding?
